"Victoria Dock Village Hall exists because of volunteers"

From organising events to managing the building and producing The Citadel, everything we do is powered by residents giving their time to support the community.

If you care about Victoria Dock and want to play a part in shaping its future, we’d love to hear from you.

Become a Volunteer

The Village Hall is managed by the VDVH Community Association, a registered charity run by local residents.

We’re committed to making sure our volunteers reflect the diversity of our community. We welcome residents of all backgrounds and experiences, and we actively encourage new voices and fresh ideas.

To join the Community Association, you must:

  • Be aged 18 or over
  • Live in the Victoria Dock area

That’s it.

You don’t need specific qualifications, just a willingness to get involved and care about the future of Victoria Dock.

There’s a minimum commitment of around two hours per month. And the more volunteers we have, the less everyone has to do.

What Does Volunteering Involve?

Volunteering can include:

  • Attending association meetings
  • Helping organise community events
  • Opening and closing the Hall
  • Supporting our annual Fun Day
  • Writing and editing The Citadel newsletter
  • Assisting with building improvements
  • Sharing ideas to improve the Dock

Some roles are hands-on. Others are behind the scenes. All make a difference.

Not a Resident?

You’re still welcome.

While only Victoria Dock residents can serve on the Community Association committee, non-residents are very welcome to volunteer at community events and support specific activities.

Community spirit doesn’t stop at postcode boundaries.

Other Ways to Get Involved

You don’t need to volunteer formally to play a part in Victoria Dock life.

You could:

  • Join one of our regular groups or classes
  • Start your own club or activity
  • Attend local councillor drop-ins or police surgeries
  • Advertise in The Citadel
  • Share ideas for future events

Connection builds resilience, and even small contributions help strengthen our neighbourhood and keeps the Village Hall going.

Donate

Like many community organisations, we’ve faced significant challenges in recent years.

  • During Covid-19, we lost many regular hirers.
  • During the energy crisis, our utility bills rose sharply.
  • Because Victoria Dock is classed as relatively affluent, we often struggle to secure external funding that other Hull community centres can access.

That means improvements to the hall – from refurbishments to essential upgrades – are often funded directly through room hire income and local fundraising.

If you’d prefer to support the Village Hall financially, we accept donations to help with building improvements and community events.

All income is reinvested directly into Victoria Dock.

Without volunteers, we simply cannot sustain the level of activity and events our community values.
